Catalogue Note
Thomas Harris was a London clockmaker of the Restoration/William and Mary period, working during the important transition from lantern clocks to the sophisticated longcase and spring-driven clocks of the late 17th century. His name is particularly associated with St Dunstan-in-the-West on Fleet Street, where he made the famous public clock installed in 1671. It was installed on the medieval church of St Dunstan-in-the-West and was designed to be visible to people in Fleet Street. Importantly, it had a minute hand. It is commonly described as one of London's earliest — and possibly the first — public clocks with a minute hand. The clock was double-sided and incorporated two striking figures, traditionally known as Gog and Magog, which strike the bells. The original medieval church was subsequently demolished and replaced by the present building. The clock was removed and later installed at a house in Regent's Park before being returned to St Dunstan's in 1935, where it remains. £6,000-8,000

Provenance
Purchased by the current vendor from the Pelham Galleries, 23rd June 1977, as 'A George Il finely carved mahogany side table on cabriole legs, with original fossil top'
Catalogue Note
This handsome side table, of exceptionally robust and sculptural character, belongs to the sophisticated Roman Revival furniture produced during the early years of the George Il period. The boldly articulated apron, enriched with exuberant foliate and lambrequin carving and centred by a finely carved Vitruvian-scroll frieze, reflects the classical vocabulary championed by the 3rd Earl of Burlington and developed with particular theatricality by his protégé, the artist and architect William Kent (1685–1748).
With its Vitruvian frieze, exuberant acanthus ornament and sculptural supports, the present table finds a particularly interesting comparison in a George Il giltwood side table from the collection of the 7th Earl of Lanesborough, sold at Sworders, Fine Interiors, 23 June 2026, lot 9, for £90,000 hammer. The related use of deeply carved classical ornament and the Kentian vocabulary of the frieze and supports provides a compelling comparison for the present example.

THE COMBE SUITE
Combe House is a distinguished Garde I listed Elizabethan country house with medieval origins, the present house having been substantially rebuilt for the Beaumont family in the late 16th century, with the principal range constructed in 1572. In 1615 the estate passed to the Putt family, who remained at Combe for more than two centuries.
The house was successively enlarged and remodelled, notably during the 17th and 18th centuries, and retains an important sequence of architectural fabric and interiors reflecting the history of an established Devon landed family. Amongits later occupants was Thomas Putt (1722-1787), whose tenure saw significant alterations to the house. Following the death of Thomas Putt in 1844, the estate passed by inheritance to his sister Margaretta Putt, wife of the Reverend Henry Marker, and subsequently descended through the Marker family.
The Combe Suite comprises a pair of George Il library armchairs, two pairs of side chairs and a stool, together with a pair of George Il walnut side tables. They feature in an article by Christopher Hussey for Country Life in June 1955 where they are visible in-situ in the interiors of Combe.

Combe House, Gittisham
Thomas Putt, known as "Black Tom" Putt, was the owner of Combe House, Gittisham, Devon, from 1757 until his death in 1787. A barrister by profession and member of the longstanding Putt family of Combe Thomas Putt was responsible for the late-18th-century refurbishment of parts of Combe House, carried out to a notably high standard, as well as the development of its gardens and pleasure grounds, it is believed that it was in this period that the Combe suite was commissioned.
Paul Saunders (1722-1771)
Paul Saunders was one of the leading London upholsterers, cabinet-makers and tapestry-makers of the mid-Georgian period. Apprenticed to the upholsterer Michael Bradshaw in 1738, Saunders subsequently established himself in Soho, entering into partnership with George Smith Bradshaw. By the 1750s, his workshop had become an important source of fashionable furniture and furnishings for the aristocratic interiors of England. Based in Soho Square, Saunders supplied suites of seat furniture in the fashionable Rococo and French taste to distinguished clients including the 3rd Viscount Weymouth at Longleat, the 1st Earl of Leicester at Holkham Hall and the 2nd Earl of Egremont at Petworth House. Saunders was appointed Tapestry Maker to His Majesty George Ill in 1757 and subsequently held offices within the Great Wardrobe.
